Tula Poggas, age 85, a beloved wife, mother, and Yiayia, died peacefully at home on May 8, 2024.
Tula was born in Pikerni, Greece, on May 12, 1938. She immigrated to Denver with her sister Aristea on May 1, 1960, to join their family. On August 27, 1961, she married John, the love of her life. Together, they built a wonderful life, enriching the lives of their four children and their families. Tula dedicated herself to her family, the church, and her extended community. An active member of Philoptochos, Tula volunteered at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral and showcased her culinary skills at the Greek Festival, much to the delight of her family and friends. She was cherished for her love of cooking and gardening, her strong faith, her sense of humor, her strength, and her candor. Although she adored all of her grandchildren, she was very close to her only granddaughter Karissa who has inherited many of these wonderful traits.
Tula was predeceased by her parents, Constantine and Efthemia Maniatis; her siblings Pete Maniatis, Maria Papadimitropoulos, Andy Maniatis, John Maniatis, and Aristea Zaffer; and her step-grandson Joshua Garcia. She is survived by her husband of 62 years John Poggas; children Mary (Prokopios) Tzanos, Vlasi (Lisa) Poggas, Tina (Gilbert) Garcia, and Jim Poggas; grandchildren Dimitrios (Mado) Tzanos, Giannis Tzanos, Karissa Garcia, and Nikolas (Vanessa) Garcia; great-grandson Nikolas Garcia II; her brother George Maniatis; her godsons Alex Papadimitropoulos, George Psyllas and Nick Latsis, and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Throughout her life, Tula brought immense joy and happiness, especially to her family. She will be greatly missed.
