Dick Leopoldus, 81, of Golden, Colorado, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on March 29, 1945, in Loveland, Colorado, to Nicholas and Sarah (Whietzel) Leopoldus and graduated from Lakewood High School in 1964, where he competed in both wrestling and baseball.
Dick spent his career with Mission Viejo, Shea Homes, and Oakwood Homes, helping to design, develop, and build communities and more importantly neighborhoods that will remain a lasting part of his legacy. He was known for his ornery sense of humor, unwavering kindness, and deep devotion to his family and those he loved. He quietly, and often unknowingly, helped and gave to others, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Dick is survived by his beloved children, Shea Eickelman (Greg), Dawn Schwenk (Ben), and Tory Leopoldus (Suzanne); his cherished grandchildren, Benny Schwenk (Taylor), Zach Schwenk, Drew Eickelman, Jake Eickelman, and Cooper Schwenk; his great-grandsons, Colson Schwenk and Roland Schwenk; and his sister, Beverly (Robert) Karges as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Sarah (Whietzel) Leopoldus; his sister, Joyce (Leopoldus) Harrington; and his brother, Nicholas Leopoldus.
For more than 35 years following the loss of his mother, Dick participated in Alzheimer’s research, beginning with a brain scan shortly after her passing and continuing with annual updates and questionnaires. Though he never received results or information that would directly diagnose or benefit him, he remained committed to advancing understanding of the disease. In keeping with his final wishes, he chose to continue supporting this important work through the donation of his brain for medical research, hoping that future families might be spared the hardships it brings.
A Celebration of Dick’s Life will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado with a reception immediately to follow at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood, where family and friends are invited to gather, share stories and laughter, and celebrate his life and freedom from Alzheimer’s disease, which slowly stole his memories, but never his spirit.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to: Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center IU School of Medicine, 355 W. 16th Street, Goodman Hall, Suite 4100, Indianapolis, IN 46202. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered love, support, and care during this time.
