David Allen Day passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, May 15. Dave was born in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Nov. 22, 1924 to Edmund Ezra and Emily Emerson Day. He was educated at Deerfield Academy, Cornell University and University of Illinois receiving his Master's in Civil Engineering. Dave was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy on his wedding day, Sept. 8, 1945. His civil engineering career began as an engineering professor at the University of Illinois and included the Deanship of Engineering at the University of Denver and Project Engineer for Stearns-Rogers and Air Products. His devotion to education led him to co-author Moving the Earth, a long-standing civil engineering college textbook, and development of the Life-long Learning Program at Wind Crest Retirement Community, where he and his wife Mary lived for 5 years. An avid tennis player for 80 years, Dave also had a passion for skiing, traveling, photography and bridge. He will be missed by Mary, his wife of 71 years; children: Marilyn Morfitt (Neil), Barbara Day, Suzanne Peterson (Andy), Ted Day (Susy) and Carrie Day (Tim); and 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Dave and Mary's first child Dallen died in infancy. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church (2950 S University Blvd, Denver) on Saturday, May 21 at 11 am with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be given in Dave's memory to Christ Episcopal Church or Cornell University, 130 E Seneca St., Suite 400, Ithaca, NY 14850.
