Darrell D. Hood

Darrell Dean Hood, 90, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Aurora Medical Center Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. Darrell was born June 15, 1924 to Russell Hoyt and Nora Kathleen (George) Hood in Boyd, Oklahoma on a parcel of land originally homesteaded by his grandparents. He was the second of 4 children. He attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse near Kim, Colorado, after which his family moved into Kim and he graduated high school in 1942. Darrell served in the US Navy during WWII and was stationed in San Diego, CA. He met June Conner, a Navy WAVE and they were married in San Diego in 1945 and subsequently had three children: David, Sherrie and Nancy. After the war, Darrell & June returned to Alamosa, Colorado where he took up his father's trade as a barber. In 1948 they moved to Boulder, Colorado where he began a long career with the Mountain States Bell Telephone Company as a lineman. He was instrumental installing many of the telephone lines in northern Colorado's remote mountains. During his long career with the telephone company he moved up to senior management before retiring in 1977. After Darrell and June divorced in 1960, he met the love of his life at a square dance, Charlotte Bowden and they were married in 1963. Darrell loved time spent with family and friends whether it was a game of golf, cards, puzzles or reading about the old west. He was a gifted carpenter and electrician and volunteered his time and skill assisting anyone who asked. His passion for the Colorado Mountains and wildlife was evident by his mastery as a hunter and fisherman. Darrell was best known for his unique artistry highlighting Colorado wildlife in his grandfather clocks, rock paintings, woodcarvings and intarsia. Darrell is survived by his children; son, Dr. David Dean Hood and his wife Caron; daughter, Sherrie and her husband Jamie Jones; daughter, Nancy Griffin; grandchildren: Justin Anders, Samantha (Hood) Livengood, Kaity and Carrie Williams, Jessica (Hood) Pate, Robyn (Anders) Force, Jason Hood, Daniel Hood, Winter Carroll; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents: Hoyt and Kathleen (George) Hood and his siblings: Hoyt Hood Jr., Margaret (Hood) Gazaway, and Donald Hood, and Darrell's beloved wife of 50 years, Charlotte (Bowden) Hood who died in May 2014. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home (11150 E Dartmouth Ave., Aurora, CO 80014) at 10:00 am with Paster Peggie Auten officiating. The family will greet friends from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Sunday following the service at the reception center on site. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery (62 11th Ave., Longmont, CO 80501) on Monday, October 27, 2014 at 10:00 am.
