Dan was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before going on to spend most of his life in Littleton, Colorado. He was a devoted father, a lifelong educator, and a loving presence to everyone who knew him. A dedicated parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he attended grade school, Dan graduated from Heritage High School and carried his faith and values with him throughout his life.
Dan pursued his calling in education with passion and purpose; reflected in the degrees he accumulated. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master of Arts in Special Education (Moderate Needs) from the University of Northern Colorado, followed by a Master of Education in Professional Leadership & Principalship from Arizona State University. He held both an Initial Principal License and a Professional Special Educators Teaching License through the Colorado Department of Education.
For most of his career, Dan worked as a teacher—a role that reflected his patience, compassion, and deep belief in every person’s potential. He spent many impactful years at Denver Academy, where he was honored with the Wings Award for Teacher of the Year. He later went on to serve as Principal at Humanex Academy, continuing his commitment to inclusive, supportive education.
Teaching was never just a job for Dan; it was a calling, and the impact he made on his students and school communities will be felt for years to come. Known for a wisdom that came from experience and an adventurous spirit, he built rapport effortlessly through his kindness and charisma. Everywhere he went, someone knew “Mr. Toomey.”
Outside of work, Dan found peace and joy in simple, restorative routines. He loved riding his bike, going for long walks, and spending time outdoors. He was always surrounded by family and shared an especially close bond with his brothers, valuing time together and the deep connections they maintained throughout his life.
Above all else, Dan was an amazing father. His children were his greatest pride, and he showed his love through consistency, kindness, and unwavering support.
Dan passed away from FTD, Frontal Temporal Dementia, more recently known as “the Bruce Willis disease.” His time from diagnosis to passing was quick.
Dan will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his gentle spirit, his dedication to others, and the love he gave so freely to his family and all those he touched.
