Daniel (Dan) John Cavnaugh, 86, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025, in Golden, Colorado. He was born on January 15, 1939, in Buffalo, New York.

Dan attended Emerson Vocational High School in Buffalo, where he studied woodworking. A well-rounded and spirited student, he served on the student council, sang in the glee club, and excelled as a talented and well-regarded tennis player. He also played on—and managed—the school basketball team. His love of sports continued throughout his life, and he enjoyed softball, bowling, and skiing for many years.

After high school, Dan proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1959. He treasured the camaraderie, the travel, and the many lessons his service brought him. His time in the Navy remained one of his greatest sources of pride.

Following his service, Dan set off for California, where he embarked on a career in finance. In 1973, an opportunity led him to relocate to Colorado, a place he would happily call home for the rest of his life. He later partnered in opening a mortgage company, which he guided with dedication and enthusiasm until his retirement in the early 2000s.

Dan was a loving father and husband, a devoted employer, a loyal friend, and a cherished family member. Those who knew him will remember his extraordinary love of Christmas. Affectionately known as “Santa Dan,” he brought the holiday spirit to life through festive decorations, lively office celebrations at the Heritage Square Opera House, and his generous heart.

One of Dan’s greatest joys was fishing—especially at his beloved Lake McConaughy in Nebraska. Summers spent there with his wife, Pat, along with family and friends, created some of his happiest memories. Dan also shared his life with many beloved dogs and cats, whose companionship he deeply valued.

Dan is survived by his daughter, Kellie & husband Keith Penney, and his son, William Cavnaugh, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat.

He will be remembered with love, gratitude, and countless fond memories.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on December 29, 2025 at Horan & McConaty, 5303 E. County Line Rd., Centennial, CO 80122. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Humane Colorado-Leslie A. Malone Center, in honor of Dan and Pat’s devotion to animal rescue and adoption.
