In Loving Memory of Charles Robinson Upton

May 1, 1938 – May 17, 2025

Charles “Charlie” Robinson Upton, age 87, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, May 17, 2025, surrounded by his beloved wife of 65 years, Janet G. Upton, and his daughter, Jennifer Upton Zanon.

Born on May 1, 1938, in Marin County, California, Charlie grew up in the coastal beauty of Stinson Beach. He attended Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley along with Jan; however, they later reconnected in 1957, leading to a loving marriage in October 1959. Together, they built a family, raising their daughter, Jennifer Upton Zanon, and their son, Robinson Allan Upton who tragically passed away in a rock-climbing accident in 1992.

Charlie established a lifelong career in construction. His passion for building began at the young age of 12, working alongside his father, and continued through his apprenticeship in 1956. Charlie and Jan moved their family to Breckenridge, Colorado, in 1972, where he worked as a construction superintendent before founding his own company, C.R. Upton Construction, in 1979. With skill, dedication, and an unwavering work ethic, he built stunning custom homes, remodeled spaces, and developed commercial buildings that stood as testaments to his craft.

Beyond his professional achievements, Charlie was an adventurer at heart. He found joy in the great outdoors—whether camping, fishing, hunting, golfing, or skiing. His love for black Labrador retrievers was unmatched, and his enthusiasm for sharing his passions extended to his role as a devoted 4-H Horse leader, guiding and encouraging his children in their pursuits.

Upon retiring in 2002, Charlie and Jan relocated to Arvada to be near their grandchildren, Jessica Leigh Zanon and Garrett Robinson Zanon. He was a patient, kind, and generous Papa, who passed down his love for nature and adventure, creating treasured memories for his family. One of his greatest joys in later years was holding his first great-granddaughter, Parklynn Hayes Zanon, daughter of Garrett and his wife, Cassidi Zanon.

Charlie’s presence was gentle yet profound. A man of few words, his wisdom spoke volumes. He was kind, intelligent, and unwaveringly loyal—a friend who stood by your side for life. Those fortunate enough to know him will forever carry his warmth, quiet strength, and legacy of love in their hearts.

In accordance with Charlie’s wishes, a small private gathering will be held to celebrate his life.

In Lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in his memory to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Safe Harbor Lab Rescue.
