Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles (Chuck) Joseph Loerwald on May 8, 2026 at his home in Aurora, Colorado. He grew up in Cortez, Colorado and as a young man enlisted in the US Army. He then served proudly in Vietnam from 1967-1969.

Chuck was born September 27, 1946 to Lawrence Walter Loerwald and Rita Loyer Loerwald in Hereford, Texas. He is preceded in death by sisters Cecelia Ann Williams, Juanita McCabe, Helen Fuchs and his brother John. He attended Mesa College in Grand Junction, CO. and married Justin Victoria Hartley on September 30, 1972 in Cortez. Chuck enjoyed a 30-year career with the Colorado State Highway Department. Among his many duties as a Maintenance Superintendent, he performed avalanche mitigation in the Arapaho National Forest. Each morning he would leave the house announcing that he was off to “shoot the sisters!”

Chuck and Justin were blessed by the birth of one daughter, Andrea Justin. Andrea, her husband Michael and their two precious daughters, Abigail and Julia, were the light of Chuck’s life. Known affectionately as “Bampo” to his girls, there was nothing in this world that he would not do for them.

He heart-warming, engaging personality made him a popular neighbor and friend. A private ceremony will be held at the Fort Logan Cemetery on May 28, 2026. Chuck will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the Loerwald family asks that friends and family consider donating to the Longhopes Donkey Rescue in Bennet, Colorado. (http://www.longhopes.org/donate/)
