Carol Lee Hughes

May 31, 1943 — January 19, 2024

Carol Lee Hughes, RN, 80, of Broomfield, Colorado was surrounded by her loved ones as she was called home to be with the Lord on January 19, 2024.

She was born in Pueblo on May 31, 1943, to Chester and Lois Stice. She was the eighth of thirteen children and the twin sister of Sharol Dee Roush. Carol graduated from Pueblo County High School before attending Western Bible College. She then studied nursing at Presbyterian School of Nursing in Denver, Colorado and fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse in 1966. She cared for patients at the Nebraska State Hospital, Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital, Lutheran Medical Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital.

Carol met her sweetie, Robert, in 1959 at a Youth for Christ rally in Pueblo. Carol played the piano while Robert led the singing. Robert asked the Stice Sisters to provide the special music at a Bible Conference, giving him an opportunity to get to know Carol. The two fell in love and were married on September 17, 1965.

Carol and Robert started a family of their own and their children meant the world to them. Melody was born in 1967, Susan came along in 1970, and Jennifer completed their family in 1973. The girls kept Carol and Robert busy and were their pride and joy.

Carol was passionate about her role as a nurse. Throughout her career she worked in Behavioral Health, the Pain Clinic, Hospice, Home Health, and Pre-surgery. Her favorite position was working with critically ill patients in Intensive Care for 25 years.

Though Carol loved being a mom, she shined as a Nana. She treasured her time with her grandchildren and was always willing to give a baby a bath, push a toddler in a swing, or endure a sporting event in inclement weather.

Carol was heavily involved in several church organizations. She facilitated children’s programs, supported MOPs, played the piano, sang in the choir, and participated in many Bible studies throughout her life. She served as the local Gideon Auxiliary Vice President and enjoyed distributing Bibles to healthcare personnel. Carol led neighborhood kids to the Lord and was a witness for Christ.

Carol was a loyal and generous friend. She developed deep friendships during Bible studies, in church, and through work. Carol became a surrogate mother to the children of her beloved friends and family members who passed away.

Everyone who knew Carol recognized how much she loved her family. The Stice siblings and many nieces and nephews considered her a source of strength and happiness. Carol devoted herself to their care.

Carol traveled extensively with her sweetie, Robert. She enjoyed seeing the world on a cruise ship or a tour bus and learning history and about other cultures.

Carol will be remembered for being a hard worker and leading a life of service. Her helpfulness and thoughtfulness enhanced many lives. Carol’s memory lives on in the hearts of all those who loved her.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Lois Stice; mother-in-law, Mildred Hughes; siblings Norman Stice, Jerry (Jo Ann) Stice, Jean (Merle Rowland) Hadduck, Barbara (Lester) Stolz, Darryl Stice, Sharol (Robert) Roush, Linda (Donald) Mead, William Stice, and Tom Hughes.

Carol is survived by her husband Robert Hughes; daughters Melody (Carl) Romero, Susan (Michael) Rodriguez; Jennifer (Alex) Roitz; grandchildren Savannah (Jake Oda) Rodriguez, Katelyn (Blake) Rider, Kendra Romero, Jacob Typher, Ella Rodriguez, Alexander Roitz; siblings Betty Stice, Charles Hadduck, Norma (Garnet) Wright, Philip (Pat) Stice, Becky Stice, Gail (James) Carpenter; Kenneth (Shirley) Stice, Mary Jane Hughes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
