Carl Hedin Smith, born September 23, 1938, passed away on July 7, 2023 in Colorado. He was 84 years old.

Carl grew up in Melrose, Massachusetts, graduating from Melrose High School in 1956 and proceeding to Bowdoin College before joining the US Navy as an officer in 1960.

He spent much of his service overseas in Japan as Communications Officer on a destroyer.

In 1963, Carl married Ruth Elizabeth England of Painesville, Ohio. The two moved to Chicago where Carl earned an MBA and embarked on a career in railroading, his lifelong passion. They moved to Denver where he joined the Denver Rio Grande and Western Railroad, and worked for 23 years as Manager of Market Research and later, as Budgeting Officer.

After retirement Carl and Ruth traveled in the US and Canada. The highlight of their travels was a 3-week trip to Australia in 1989.

Carl and Ruth enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, with particular interest in the Denver Broncos as season ticket holders for many years.  In baseball Carl’s lifelong love was the Boston Red Sox.

Carl is survived by his wife, daughter Anne of NH and son Phil, as well as his sister Sarah and her husband Ronald Swain of North Reading, MA, and their children, Ronald, and Christina, and their two grandchildren Lilah and Peter.

Carl will be placed peacefully at rest in a columbarium at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
