Carl Anthony Koval, 74, of Arvada, Colorado passed away at his home on September 27, 2026, after a brief but courageous battle with leukemia. Born on June 28, 1952, in Manchester PA to the late Bernard Anthony and Anna Marie (Oermann) Koval, Carl was an intelligent and mischievous child who matured into a wonderfully kind, generous, and thoughtful man. He was a graduate of Northeastern High School and Juniata College and received his Ph.D. in electrochemistry from the California Institute of Technology before becoming a professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder from 1980 until his retirement in 2018.
Carl experienced great joy through his family, friends, students, and colleagues. He was a lifelong athlete and enjoyed travel, nature, cooking, and gardening. In his own words, “I have had a very good life, even if it is ending sooner than I would have liked.”
He will be sorely missed by Christa, his wife of 36 years, and daughters Sara Koval, Olivia Koval (Leandro Mello), and Kayla (Daniel) Deanda. He is survived by his sisters Judith Koval and Carol (Rudy) Kafer; as well as a nephew, Matthew (Aurelia) Koval, and a niece MaryAnne Koval. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings John D. Koval and Monika S. Koval.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Arvada Covenant Church (5555 Ward Road, Arvada CO), with reception following. Family and friends are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to a nature or humanitarian charity of your choice, as these are causes supported by Carl throughout his life.
