Bruce was born in Whittier, California, and moved to Colorado with his parents in 1976. He graduated from Colorado State University in 1992 with a degree in microbiology and a minor in European history. He received his Masters Degree in Business Administration from CSU in 2005.
Over his career, Bruce was employed at Pace Environmental Systems, Holland and Hart, ViaWest, Case Share, Catalyst Repository Systems, opentext, and FileVine.
Bruce is survived by his wife Maureen (Barnett) Kiefer, whom he met thirty-seven years ago in Green Hall while both were students at CSU. Bruce and Maureen were married on October 6, 2001. They have two daughters, Lucy and Kate. Bruce’s “three girls” were the loves of his life.
Bruce Kiefer was a man of many talents—a man hard to define because his interests and passions were numerous and not confined by arbitrary boundaries. Bruce understood technology and he loved solving problems. He was often the first person his family members called when their iPad wasn’t working or they had a question about computer security. But Bruce had what some might say is an “old soul.” He preferred vinyl and turntables to digital music, and loved playing board games with Lucy and Kate.
Bruce was an excellent chef. He had planned to pursue a culinary career after college, but cooking became a hobby instead. He even had his own cooking blog. Bruce could make a gourmet meal with whatever he found in the pantry or refrigerator while you thought there was nothing in the house to eat. He often topped it off with a craft cocktail. If he was visiting someone, you could always find him in the kitchen and helping out. Cooking was one of the many ways he cared for others.
Bruce loved browsing record stores and cooking with Lucy and watching soccer with Kate. He was a big fan of the Bundesliga team, BVB Dortmund, and the Premier League Team, Liverpool. You could find him, with his camera, roaming the sidelines at Kate’s soccer games, serving as the team photographer and calling out defensive shifts. He and Lucy shared a deep love of music and movies and were often found watching obscure horror and B-movies. You could often find him attending whatever concert the girls wanted to see. In nice weather, Bruce set up a make-shift movie screen in the yard, showing a variety of films for movie night. The girls and Maureen were so grateful Bruce was able to take a sabbatical last summer to spend more time with them. They worked on many projects in the yard, the soccer field and just enjoyed having him available for anything.
Bruce will be missed for his delightful, quirky sense of humor, his quiet conspiratorial laugh, his perseverance, his endless curiosity, and his kindness and compassion. But most of all, we will miss his goodness. He was an introvert’s introvert. But, once you were in his circle, you found a deeply funny, warm and sensitive person. There will never be another quite like him.
Bruce was preceded in death by his older brother Brian in 1983, forever a defining moment in his life.
Other survivors include his parents Lois and Gerald Kiefer, sister Rebecca May. Sisters-in-law Christine McGinnis (Jeff), Jeanne Power and Debbie Gasser (Gary.) Nieces Brittany Seegrist, Breanne Stamper( Chris) Brooke May and Sage McGinnis. Nephews Jeff May (Alyssa), Connor May (Alex) Ethan May, and Hayden McGinnis (Emma.)
Memorials can go to the Clyfford Still Museum.
