Berton Howard Borgmann, 67, died in Aurora, Colorado on January 9th due to postoperative complications.
Born on November 27th, 1955 in Montrose, Colorado to Howard (dec.) and Aletha Borgmann, Bert was raised in Broomfield, Colorado. A 1974 graduate of Broomfield High School, he then attended Colorado State University. After graduation, Bert worked in the CSU Sports Information Department before taking a position as the University of Northern Colorado Sports information director. In 1988, Bert joined the Colorado High School Activities Association in Aurora, where he worked until his retirement in July 2021.
Bert was a man of great character who devoted his life to his family and the service of student athletes across the state of Colorado. During his 33-year career with CHSAA, Bert oversaw more than half of the sports and activities available to students. Even when he wasn’t in charge of a tournament, he could be spotted lending a helping hand or presenting a trophy. Bert was a walking history book and took pride in honoring the past while helping move the association forward. Combining his love of sports and history, Bert served for many years on the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
Bert was a universal lover of sports, and when not working, could often be found with a remote in his hand, switching channels between games on the TV. Another of his favorite pastimes was attending Colorado Rockies games, including spring training games in Arizona with the love of his life, Alexandra Borgmann, whom he married in 1985. In addition to sports, Bert greatly enjoyed a good road trip and loved to travel. The Colorado mountains, the trails of Utah, and New Mexico towns were some of his favorite places. He was full of stories, jokes, memes, and an endless amount of knowledge and advice that he would share with anyone and everyone. Bert fiercely loved his children and his late wife Alexandra and shared many stories and memories on Facebook. He enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Gunnar, and was looking forward to the birth of his granddaughter in June 2023. Part of enjoying his retirement included more travel, volunteering at his church, and also in his grandson's kindergarten class.
Bert is survived by his mother Aletha Borgmann, son J. Logan Borgmann, daughter Callie P. Kryder (Kyle Kryder), grandson Gunnar J. Borgmann, and brother Bruce Borgmann (Jan Borgmann). He is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews.
Bert was preceded in death by the love of his life Alexandra Hays Borgmann, and his father Allan Howard Borgmann.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
To honor his love of sports and helping others, the family requests that donations be made to The Gold Crown Foundation or the CHSAA Foundation in lieu of flowers.
