Arlene Masako Kuboi-Tamariz was born February 27, 1964 in Los Angeles, and passed away in her home in Castle Rock, Colorado on March 2, 2022 at the age of 58.
Arlene spent her younger years in Honolulu, Hawaii, but returned to California where she graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor’s degree. After caring for her grandfather in Hawaii, she moved her and her son Steven to Highlands Ranch, Colorado. She worked in the metal fabrication industry for many years before stepping away to pursue other goals. Unfortunately, on January 1, 2017, Arlene was diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian Cancer. Despite this, six weeks later, she was up in the mountains snowboarding. She fought a courageous battle for the next five years and was able to accomplish many feats that many wouldn’t be able to achieve.
She conquered numerous 14’ers, triathlons and biathlons, ironman, and road bike races. Since 2014, Arlene participated in the Courage Classic and joined the Wheels of Justice, where she rode to support Children’s Hospital. She met many inspiring people who became lifelong friends. Her greatest accomplishment was completing the 2017 Honolulu Marathon on December 10, just shy of a year after being diagnosed. If she wasn’t competing, she was up in the mountains hiking or snowshoeing with her dogs Sukie and Zeus.
She is survived by her son Steven and daughter-in-law Jordan, her aunts and uncles in Hawaii and Washington, cousins in California and Arizona, and too many friends to count. Arlene was proceeded in death by her parents Arthur and Ellen.
In keeping with her nature, funeral services will be private for immediate family and friends only. Those wishing to honor her life can make a donation in her name to the Clearity Foundation at https://www.clearityfoundation.org or dedicate a race, hike, or bike ride to her.
Her legacy will live on in our hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with, as well as those she reached but never met. Please keep her memory alive.
