Ann Scherschel (née Grepo), aged 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 2, 2024, in Denver, Colorado. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Ann was the daughter of the late Peter and Matilda Grepo, who immigrated from Croatia in the 1930s. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Violet and Lillian, and her devoted husband, Paul, with whom she shared a remarkable 56-year marriage.
Ann and Paul met at a college dance, a fitting beginning to a life filled with the joy of ballroom dancing. Their journey together led them to Colorado in the late 1960s, where they established their forever home. The lean years of their early marriage taught Ann how to budget for a large family, allow for an occasional small indulgence, and entertain graciously at home.
Ann dedicated nearly 30 years to Jefferson County Public Schools, where she began as a classroom aide and concluded her career as the secretary in the district's communications department. Her colleagues fondly remember her for her calm demeanor and exceptional grammar skills.
An avid reader, Ann finished several books a week (mostly mysteries), participated in multiple book clubs, and read a newspaper every day. She loved to play games and for many years participated in monthly card-game and Bunco groups. She was a whiz at trivia, and she kept her mind sharp with daily crossword puzzles. She crocheted many afghans that have kept her family warm for years.
The Catholic faith was central to Ann’s life, and she actively participated in several church ministries. She taught religious education, and together with Paul, she mentored couples in marriage-preparation programs.
She valued friendships. She maintained life-long connections with people; she stayed in touch; she made time for people; and she made new friends throughout her lifetime.
Ann's legacy is carried on by her loving family: her daughter Pamela and son-in-law John Kaufman, daughter Karen and son-in-law Kim Miller, son David and daughter-in-law Rebecca, daughter Mary and son-in-law Kevin Brady, and daughter Kristina and son-in-law Jay Bruton. She was a proud grandmother to ten grandchildren and a great-grandmother to eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Ann will be remembered for her unwavering faith, quiet strength, and uncanny ability to sense impending joy or sadness in the lives of her children. Her family will hold private services to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to ALS United Rocky Mountain in Ann's name: https://alsrockymountain.org/donate/
