Alice Smailes Roberts, 95, passed away on the afternoon of December 29 at Ollie Steele Burden Manor. She is the daughter of George Stanley and Bertha Mae Smailes of Dickson City, Pennsylvania, and was born in 1919 in Scranton, Pennsylvania She graduated from nursing school in 1943 and entered the US Army as a nurse, serving on hospital ships from 1943 - 1945 when she met and married Faimon A. Roberts, also of Scranton. She traveled the world with her military husband as he was stationed in New York, Texas, California, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Montgomery AL. where they lived after ""Robbie"" retired in 1967. Alice received her Masters in Education from Troy State University in 1969 and then taught nursing in the Troy State Nursing School. She retired in 1983. She continued to indulge her love for travel, taking 27 cruises and tours all over the globe. Visitation will be on Friday, January 2, 2015, at Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government St. from 2-3 pm , followed by a service at 3:00 pm. Internment will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Faimon A, Roberts and her brother George Smailes. She is survived by her sons Faimon A. Roberts II and wife Elizabeth, of Baton Rouge, and Curtis A. Roberts and wife Jay of Denver, Colorado; grandsons Faimon A. Roberts III and wife Christa of Mandeville, and Matthew Roberts of Denver; granddaughters Laura Roberts Freeman and husband Corey of Zachary, and Elizabeth Anna Roberts of Baton Rouge; and great grandsons Faimon IV and Aaron Roberts; and great granddaughters Darby and Ridley Freeman. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to National Women Veterans of America (www.wvanational.org), The World War II Museum in New Orleans, or the University Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge.
