Alexander David Kicera, age 33, passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning, March 28, 2026 after a heroic battle with metastatic cancer.
Alex is survived by his wife, Lacey and their boys, his parents, David and Deena Kicera, his brother Garrett Pacotti (Kati & their girls), his sister Anna Stone (Adam & their son), and many extended family members.
Alex was born on December 8th, 1992 in Boulder, Colorado to David and Deena Kicera. Alex grew up in Longmont, Colorado with his older siblings, Garrett Pacotti and Anna Stone. Alex graduated from Niwot High School in 2010. He played varsity basketball and was involved in his 4-H Club, the St. Vrain Valley FFA Chapter. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of Northern Colorado. Alex followed in his Grandpa Lewis' footsteps with passions of livestock and hunting. Alex found joy hiking alongside Papa Lewis through the backcountry near Salida, hunting expeditions, and time with friends and family.
Alex had a passion for serving others and followed in his father's footsteps at the Boulder Police Department. He joined the department in 2016. In a statement from Chief Redfern, Alex was "known for taking the initiative on patrol and being willing to help his fellow officers in a multitude of areas". In 2020, Alex was assigned to the Traffic Unit. Alex was known by his sergeants to have the "ability to really dig into an incident and find patterns or information others did not see". His compassion was experienced throughout the Boulder community. Alex was recognized in 2019 as the Officer of the Month for his role in the investigation of a second degree kidnapping after a domestic disturbance that led to a quick arrest. After becoming a motor officer, he quickly became a top performer on the team. In 2021, he finished level 2 accident reconstruction, crash data retrieval training courses and became an instructor for LIDAR and RADAR. Of the many heroic responses Alex had during his time at the BPD, he was part of the entry team that pushed in to King Soopers during the mass shooting on March 22, 2021. Subsequently, he was awarded the medal of Valor for his bravery.
On August 29, 2025, Alex married the love of his life, Lacey, a dispatch supervisor at Boulder Police Department. It was love at first sight for both of them. Alex was blessed to have Lacey walk beside him through his treacherous cancer journey. Alex became the stepfather to Lacey's sons and loved Lacey and the boys more than words could describe. He was a positive role model for their sons and taught them wonderful life lessons that they will carry on into their future. Alex and the boys shared many similar interests including collecting Pokemon and sport cards, along with watching the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche.
Alex had many dreams and aspirations that were unfortunately cut short, but the legacy that Alex leaves behind is one of strength, courage, humor and the refusal to let anything steal his joy. We lost a great man here on earth, but Heaven got one heck of an upgrade.
Alex is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lewis and Gayle Cox, paternal grandparents, Mike and Joan Kicera, nephews Carter and Kaysen Stone.
