Randall Cohrs

February 11, 1952 — July 30, 2021

Lakewood, Colorado

Dr. Randall Jay Cohrs (Randy) was born to Richard and Marjorie on February 11, 1952, and passed from this earth on July 30, 2021, at the age of 69 years and 169 days.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard F., and mother, Marjorie, nee Colburn.

He is survived by his wife Terri, nee Carpenter, his daughter-by-love Kelly Ebner (Frank), brothers Richard P. (Carol), and Daniel L. (Tomasita), brothers-in-law Ken Carpenter (Joanne), Larry Carpenter, sister-in-law Jody Cowdin (Neil), and nieces and nephews who loved him very much.

Randy leaves behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, and love for his family.

He will always be remembered for how he embodied the generosity of Santa, as indicated by his white flowing beard; $2 bills handed out to all; and his absent-minded professor persona.

In his professional life he dedicated himself to solving the mysteries of the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) and how to eliminate the suffering of the painful disease shingles.

He worked for many years at the University of Colorado Medical School, Department of Virology, and was the founder and president of Rocky Mountain Virology Association. He was also a Consultant for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Professor Cohrs was President-elect of Rocky Mountain Branch of American Society for Microbiology and founder of the Colorado Alphaherpesvirus Latency Symposium.  Moreover, Professor Cohrs served as Vice chairman, Steering Committee for the 'Global Translational Medicine Consortium' (GTMC) headquartered in Vienna, Austria. Professor Cohrs served as editorial board member for various international peer-reviewed journals, and served on the grant review committee for the National Institute of Health (NIH).  Dr. Cohrs was the author of numerous publications in several prestigious scientific journals, and was frequently cited by other scientists in their own research.

Randy enjoyed life to the fullest with his wife Terri, and they enjoyed traveling, family and recreation together.  They enjoyed dressing as Mr. & Mrs. Claus at Halloween and delighted neighborhood children by handing out $2 bills while using the opportunity to speak to them about Jesus.  One of his greatest joys was being a mentor to students through his work and his church.  He was a humble scientist with an abiding faith in Jesus, His Savior.

He will be greatly missed.
