Obituary

Robert “Bob” Edward Buckley passed away surrounded by his loving family on March 30, 2018. He was 85 years old. He was born on March 3, 1933. Robert loved his country. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-54 performing as a Corpsman during the Korean Conflict, then in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 1959-93 and again from 2000-05. He earned the rank of Commander with the Coast Guard. Robert loved to protect and serve. He was a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff from 1956-64. He earned three letters of commendation during those eight years, including one for apprehending a robber despite being wounded during an exchange in gunfire. He was awarded a Purple Heart and a Silver Star (Valor) during his career.

After leaving the force, he became a civil law investigator for State Farm Insurance Co. (1964-75). Robert loved to teach. He was a coordinator for the California Office of Criminal Justice Planning (1974-75), and an instructor and program specialist for the Modesto Junior College Criminal Justice Training Center (1975-93). He served as the Academy Director prior to his retirement. Even after retirement, he continued to be a law enforcement mentor and volunteer. He taught Criminal Procedure and Law Enforcement on the U.S.S. Rushmore LSD-47 in the Arabian Gulf in 1996. He went on to volunteer for years with the California Highway Patrol, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, and Aurora Police Department. He also received the Award of Excellence with the Colorado Masonic Grand Lodge.

Robert loved many other things life had to offer - delicious food, smooth wine, playing basketball with his grandkids and listening to classic music.

But the thing Robert loved most was his family. Robert is survived by Mary Anne, his wife of 63 years. They met at a Lawrence Welk concert and he said it was love at first sight. He held her hand that night, and never let go.

Robert is also survived by children John (Terri), Colleen Soto and Phillip (Cathi); grandchildren Joshua Robert (Laura), Natalie Anne (Stephen) Daniels, Erin, Nathan (Marissa), Alex and Nicole; and great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, William, Oliver and Roselyn.

Robert passed on numerous life lessons to his family. He taught them how to seek out and enjoy the richness that life has to offer. He taught them family was No. 1, and your best friends were also family. Most importantly, he taught them about unconditional love.

A public viewing for Robert will be held April 9, 2018 at the Horan & McConaty Family Chapel 5303 E. County Line Rd. Centennial, Colorado 80122 starting at 9 a.m., followed by a service at 10 a.m., and a burial at Fort Logan at noon.

In lieu of flowers, please provide a donation in Robert’s name to your local Pulmonary Fibrosis organization.
