Obituary

Margaret E. (McGinn) Petersen
December 15, 1919 – January 14, 2017

Margaret "Peggy" was born in Newark New Jersey, the seventh of eight children of Patrick McGinn and Anna Kiernan McGinn. She was married to Christian James "Jim" Petersen for 35 years. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Jim, all of her siblings, her son James Petersen, and her grandson Nicholas Hidahl. She is survived by her daughter Pat (Jim) Hidahl, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret joined the Navy during WWII and worked as a secretary at Norfolk Navy Base where she met her husband Jim. They were married in Norfolk and were discharged from the Navy at the end of the war. They moved to Dupont and later Commerce City to raise a family. After her husband passed away, she moved to Windsor Gardens where she lived for about 25 years. Recently, she has been in assisted living.

After retiring from the Air Force Finance Center, where she worked as a secretary, she began a variety of activities. Margaret was a volunteer for 15 years at what is now The Museum of Nature and Science. She participated in the Senior Olympics for many years winning medals for running, broad jump and the high jump. She ran in the Commerce City "Four on the Fourth" races – running 4 miles on July 4th, for several years. Margaret met monthly with a group of retired Navy Waves for many years. She traveled to many states, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America.

Margaret had many interests. She loved to fish, hike, listen to opera and classical music, was a voracious reader and took many classes. She loved to tell stories, infused with humor, that reflected her view of life.

She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is pictured above on the day of her 97th birthday.
