Obituary

Roberta "Bobbie" Whitten, 91, of Aurora passed away recently. Roberta was born in Longmont, Colorado, where she spent the first ten years of her life. Roberta then moved to Denver and graduated from East High School. Roberta was married briefly to Jack Whitten, deceased, in the late 1940s. Roberta took meticulous care of her mother for over 14 years. Roberta and her sister, Eva Shipp, shared over 60 years together. During that time they built a cabin outside Florissant, Colorado where they hosted friends and family for over 33 years. Roberta and Eva travelled extensively throughout the United States by car and train. Roberta was an ardent writer, published under the pseudo name "Claire Whitten". Roberta loved animals deeply, always providing a good home to her adopted dogs, Broko, Jeannie, Buffy, and Molly, all deceased, and Rusty, and was a supporter of the Dumb Friends League.

Roberta worked 30 years for the State of Colorado as a Supply Officer in the Colorado State Patrol, the Division of Communications, and the Department of Public Safety. Following retirement, Roberta and Eva spent a year in Florida before settling again in Aurora. Roberta then returned to college at the Community College of Aurora, graduating with an Associate's Degree in Journalism. Roberta wrote for the college newspaper and continued taking college classes after graduation. Roberta also continued to write articles and poetry. Following her "second retirement", Roberta participated in activities at the Aurora Senior Center, especially the weekly bridge game. Roberta truly led a wonderful and full life!

Roberta's parents, Aven Hard Sr. and Ruth Robinson, brother, Aven Hard Jr., his wife Lorraine Hard, and nephew, Michael Hard preceded her in death. Roberta is survived by her sister, Eva Shipp, nephews David Hard (Debbie), Greg Hard (Susan), Gary May (JoAnn), John May (Karen), Edward May (Jean), nieces Eve Leinweber Brogan, Jackie Black (Aubrey Dobbs), and numerous other nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren. Roberta is also survived by her friends, Matt and Jean Vikdal of Aurora.

The family would like to thank all of Roberta's wonderful caregivers from Seniors Helping Seniors, Sandra Brown R.N. from Journeys Home Health and Pinnacle Hospice, and her very recent caregiver Angele. All of these skilled people allowed Roberta to stay in her home for the last three years of her life while she battled Alzheimer's disease.

Services are scheduled on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 19099 E Floyd Ave, Aurora, CO 80013 and include a Rosary at 10:15am, a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30pm followed by interment at Fairmount Cemetery.
