Walter S. Zinkevicius, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado passed away on February 17, 2017. Born December 5, 1950 in East Chicago, Indiana and raised in Chicago, Illinois, he was a first generation American to Lithuanian immigrant parents, Stasys and Emilija Zinkevicius. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Mary, sons Matthew and Simon, sisters Elena Tichacek and Jean Zambos, brother Vince, and granddaughter Charlotte. Walter served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Pleiku during the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of the University of Puget Sound, class of 1976, earning a B.A. in Accounting. He began his career at McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington. He relocated in 1982 to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. In 1988, he continued his career with the Department of Defense at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, where he retired as Director of Accounting after 36 years of service. Not yet ready for retirement, in 2012, he decided to return to work as a financial analyst for Denver Public Schools. Walter loved to stay busy. He was an avid DIY'er, remodeling his home, building furniture, and always lending a hand to his family and friend's projects. He loved to work outside in his yard; when the weather was nice that's where you would find him. He was an accomplished chess player, earning the rank of Expert, and was also skilled at bowling, darts, and billiards. Walter will be remembered for his ability to make people laugh and feel at ease. He was always good for dropping a silly quote, or a well-timed sarcastic remark to break up an otherwise serious moment. He was infinitely generous, a true family man, and had a remarkable love of life. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 5303 E. County Line Rd. Centennial, CO 80122. A Funeral Service will follow at 5 p.m. Memorial donations are suggested to the Habitat for Humanity, www.habitat.org/donate.
