Virginia Webb

June 2, 1926 — January 15, 2017

Virginia ""Ginny"" Jose Webb passed away peacefully Sunday January 15, 2017 after a brief illness at Denver Health Medical Center. Our mother, Ginny, lived a full and wonderful life. She was born June 2, 1926 in Green Kansas. Craving adventure she took a job as an airline hostess with TWA and was soon flying between California and New York. Her career with the airlines opened up a new world to Ginny where she met many lifelong friends including meeting her future husband, our father Allan Webb. Dad was a PT boat captain serving with John F. Kennedy with whom he became a lifelong friend. Mom and Dad were married in New York in 1950 and had four daughters. Throughout their life together they enjoyed many happy years in Jackson Mississiippi, Norwalk Connecticut , West Chester PA and finally retiring together in Tucson where they enjoyed the beautiful Sonoran desert life for almost 20 years. Throughout the many places Ginny lived she made friends and adapted to her new homes easily. Some of her happiest years were in Norwalk CT where she was closely involved in her daughters' school life, a dedicated volunteer with Headstart and enjoyed tennis and bridge. She was a happy intelligent woman who always seemed to have an inner light about her. Ginny enjoyed art museums and in particular was an avid collector of Andrew Wyeth prints. She was a big sports fan and we were all quite proud of her ability to rattle off baseball statistics as well as any sports writer! She loved to read and read the newspaper cover to cover each day with particular interest in politics. We all teased, yet admired Mom for her thrifty nature probably honed from a depression era upbringing. Family legend has it that she had the first box of aluminum foil she ever bought. Ginny was far from the helicopter mom and encouraged each of us to be self-sufficient and independent. That may have been out of necessity as our father traveled a great deal while we were growing up and she had her hands full raising four daughters. But whatever her motivation we all grew to become strong independent women. In her last years living in Colorado Ginny developed a happy loving relationship with her grandchildren Anne and Allan and visited often her other two grandchildren Zachary and Stephanie, never missing a graduation or milestone. Ginny is survived by her four daughters, Laura Ellgen and her husband Richard Ellgen, of Chapel Hill NC, Stephanie Thomas and her husband Greg Thomas of Denver, Gina Claypoole and her husband Bill Claypoole of Hickory NC and Mary Marzbanian of Carrboro NC . She is also survived by a sister, Rene Tewell of Denver. Her daughters consider themselves so lucky to have had this wonderful woman as a loving mother, counselor, cheerleader and role model in their lives and will miss this member of the ""greatest generation"" terribly.
