Usha Herbert

Usha Herbert, 76, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away October 30, 2017. Usha was born on May 18, 1941 in Khandwa, M.P. India to Mr. and Mrs. K.D. Ram. She grew up in Raipur, Chhattisgarh which was very close to her maternal grandparents’ home in the city, Dhamtari. She had six siblings, four of them were older than her. Raipur was the place where she had all of her education. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Chemistry in 1964, she served as a lecturer in Chemistry at different places in the state. In 1968, she was married to Washington Herbert who lived in Denver, Colorado of USA at the time. She then moved to Colorado in 1969. Her son Bill was born in 1969 and daughter Meena was born in 1973. She raised her children in Walsenburg, Colorado. Usha worked as a medical technologist for 9 years and then she took a job as an instructor of Chemistry at Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado. After serving for 20 years, she retired from there as a professor in 2001. The highlight of her career was that she made a difference in the lives of many students. She started the Science Fair in Trinidad in which the neighborhood counties could participate. The Science fair is for K through 12 students. She was the director of the Science fair for 9 years while still serving as the professor in Chemistry at the college. She took the winners of the science fair to the International level as well. Usha touched the lives of so many students and she was very proud of her accomplishments. After retiring in 2001, she moved to Denver to be close to her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Smoky Hill United Methodist Church and also a member of the India Pakistan Lutheran Church where she served as the director of music. Usha is survived by children, William K. (Katie) Herbert and Meena A. (Paul) Vieyra; grandsons, Alexander J. Herbert, James R. Herbert, Matthew J. Herbert, Christopher J. Vieyra and Noah A. Vieyra; siblings, Saraswati Swami, Bhanu Prakash (Preminda) Ram and sister-in-law, Nalini Ram. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Washington; siblings, Savitri Masih, Laxmi Mishra, Satya Prakash Ram, Prem Prakash Ram and brothers-in-law, Shyam Swami and Ravi Mishra. Usha had numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. A Memorial Service for Usha will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Smoky Hill United Methodist Church, 19491 E. Smoky Hill Road, Centennial, CO 80015.
