Sam Schlotthauer, age 92, joined his siblings, and parents in heaven on June 26, 2016. He was born in Fort Morgan, Colorado on December 12, 1923 to Jacob and Katherine Schlotthauer. Sam grew up on a farm in Fort Morgan, the youngest of 11 children. Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy on November 16, 1942. After serving his country in the South Pacific in WWII, he was discharged in Charleston, SC on April 18, 1946. It is there that he met the love of his life Nancy Pitts, who he soon married. They moved back to Denver where they began their life together. Sam enrolled at the University of Denver, started his family, and worked several part time jobs to pay the bills and get through school. Sam graduated from DU with a BS degree in accounting and remained in the Denver and Aurora area for the next 70 years. Sam held positions in accounting at the Pulman Co., Northwest Engineering Co., and then completed the remainder of his working career at Blue Cross and Blue Shield. At BC&BS he started as an accountant, moved to auditing and eventually held management positions. After retirement, Sam spent a quiet and peaceful time enjoying his family and favorite pastime of watching sports on TV, especially baseball which he enjoyed the most. Sam was a quiet, gentle, frugal man who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. However after losing most of his vision and an increasing loss of hearing, and ongoing signs of dementia in the last several years, the quality of his life became compromised. Sam lost his beloved wife, Nancy, on 2/19/2002 after 56 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters of which Sam was the youngest.
