Raymond McKinzie

Raymond McKinzie March 30, 1930 - February 26, 2017, age 86. Ray McKinzie was born in Macksburg Iowa to Marion and Nina (Griswold) McKinzie. He attended high school in Winterset, served as senior class president and graduated in 1947. After two years of college at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, he enlisted in the US Navy. Ray later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the US Navy Post Graduate School and a Masters of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He served on submarines, both conventional and nuclear, retiring from the Navy after 21 years of service with the rank of Commander. He then worked at Lockheed Corporation in Sunnyvale, California for 20 years. Following retirement, he spent two decades in Prescott, Arizona before moving to Colorado in late 2013. Ray was an accomplished musician and an active member of the Prescott Strings and the Prescott POPS Symphony. He was also a skilled bridge player, earning Life Master status from the American Contract Bridge League. Ray is survived by his wife Barbara, (the former Barbara Steddom) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, daughters Jeanne Chamberlain (Ken) of Portland, Oregon and Teresa Cox (Bernard) of Atlanta, Georgia, sons Scott McKinzie (Kate) of Oakland, California and Mark McKinzie (Heather Lewis) of Rochester, New York. Stepchildren include Steve Ahrenholtz (Cynthia) of Lacey, Washington, Jane Mulledy (Scott) of Omaha, Nebraska and Mark Ahrenholtz (Kim) of Littleton, Colorado. In addition Ray is survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, one sister, Norma Jean Slater of Adel, Iowa and one brother, Kenneth McKinzie of Champaign, Illinois. He was predeceased by his parents, one brother, and his first wife, Beverly. A memorial service will be held on April 30, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Wind Crest retirement community in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, Ray will be honored with a burial at sea. A memorial marker will be placed at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California. Ray's family requests that memorial donations be directed to either the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society or a charity of your choice.
