Norma Nunez

July 11, 1937 — November 19, 2016

Norma Aurora Nuñez, age 79, died peacefully at home on November 19, 2016. Born July 11, 1937 in Rio Grande, Zacatecas, MX, she grew up in Torreon then moved to Denver with her mother at the age of 18. She found the man of her dreams while working in Denver. She knew Nabor had high business aspirations. The two of them started a family and realized their dream of opening their own restaurant, La Cueva, in 1974, in old downtown Aurora. Norma's social prowess found her involved in many community issues. She was a long time member of Las Hermanas, The Red Hat Ladies, and Dancing for My Heart. Norma left her mark on the Original Aurora community by creating The Nuñez Foundation in the 1990s. She raised several thousands of dollars each year to give college scholarships to many deserving youth in the neighborhood. She even wrote a book honoring her husband to raise money for her foundation: Recetas de mi Esposo. Norma could often be found socializing in her booth at La Cueva and giving many young people an earful of advice. Survivors include daughter Molly Nuñez-Cohen (Albert) and son Alfonso Nuñez (Rachel), and several God-children. Norma was preceded in death by husband Nabor, and her parents Aurora and Abraham. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, December 5th, at Saint James Catholic Church, 1311 Oneida St. Memoriams to honor Norma may be made to to the Nuñez Foundation, c/o La Cueva, 9742 East Colfax Avenue, Aurora, CO 80010.
