Mary Lucas

Mary Veronica Lucas, 98, died July 21 at her home in Littleton. She was born Mary Motoh on May 8, 1918 in Kemmerer, Wyoming. She attended local schools and graduated from Colorado State Teachers College (now University of Northern Colorado), returning to Wyoming to teach in a two-room school. In 1942 she married William J. Lucas, who preceded her in death in 2005. In their 63-year marriage they lived in many locations in Idaho, Montana and Colorado, as well as Pennsylvania and Washington DC. Among the many activities in her life, Mary was an avid quilter, rug hooker, knitter, and sewer. She finished her last quilt three weeks before she died. In her final years, with help from various Visiting Angels and material provided by her daughter Sue, Mary stitched and donated more than a dozen lap quilts for people in hospice care through St. Frances Cabrini Parish. One grateful family sent Mary a note thanking her for the quilt, saying it would be kept as a family keepsake. Mary read widely in her lifetime. She was a serious bridge player, a fine cook, and a veteran of many horseback trips in the Rockies. She and her husband traveled extensively, including multiple trips to Europe as well as to Latin America. She loved her family and friends, the Rocky Mountains, birds and wild animals, and gardening. Mary is survived by their five children: Bonnie Resinski, Margaret (Peggy) Bond, William Joseph (Joe) Lucas, Mary Sue Suit, and Peter Lucas; by ten grandchildren: Rachel, Rebecca, and Murray Resinski; Jude, Lucas, and David Bond; Holly and William Suit; and Kaitlin and Madeline Lucas; and by seven great grandchildren: Georgia, Ronan, Zoe, and Odin Bond; and Nathaniel, Isaac, and Alexander Suit. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Francis Cabrini at 10:30 AM Thursday, July 28. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to the Colorado Trail Foundation in Golden, Colorado (www.coloradotrail.org).
