Marian Shovlin

December 11, 1931 — June 24, 2016

Marian Aileen (Smith) Shovlin was born, the middle of three children, on December 11, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois to Karl and Monica Smith. Marian's parents divorced when she was five years old. Her mother moved Marian, her older brother, Hugh and younger sister, Cele to the Denver area. In her younger years, she attended St. Catherine's Elementary School, Skinner Jr. High and graduated in 1951 from North High School in Denver. She met Joseph Patrick Shovlin in 1953, and they were married while he served in the Navy. Together, they had four daughters, Anne, Eileen, Betty and Linda. She worked very hard to raise her daughters, who were 14 months apart. Therefore, they were all toddlers and later, teenagers all at the same time. Later in life, her daughters would tell her she was a saint, having to take care of all of the girls being of similar age all at once. Marian received her Associate's Degree in Library Sciences from Red Rocks Community College. She worked as an intern at Mrachek Middle School, which allowed the family to take a trip to Disneyland. She was a homemaker, a telephone operator and a librarian, throughout her life. Marian enjoyed sewing and making clothing for her daughters. One year, a photo of a beautiful green and black coat she made, appeared in the newspaper. In her spare time, Marian loved square dancing, going on drives, spending time in the mountains, and going to the movies. She was a quiet woman who loved her husband and family, especially her five grandchildren and all they've accomplished. She is survived by her loving husband, of 63 years, Joseph Patrick ""Pat"" Shovlin; daughters, Anne Shovlin, Eileen Shovlin, Betty Galbraith, and Linda Choun and her husband, Craig Choun; five grandchildren, Brandon Galbraith, Megan Choun, Brittany Wolma and her husband Kyle, Kayla Choun and Ethan Choun; sister, Cele Reynolds and her husband Jerry; and nieces and a nephew, Cindy, Nanette, Monica and Bobby. Recitation of the Rosary will be Thursday, June 30, 2016, beginning at 9:30 AM, immediately followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM, both at St. Therese Catholic Church, 1243 Kingston Street, in Aurora, Colorado 80010, with a reception at the church.
