Lew Hickman

Lew Hickman, 69, a Denver resident passed away on November 6, 2017. A visitation and viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Horan & McConaty, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard on Monday, November 20, 2017. A short military graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Fort Logan National Cemetery (Staging Area ""B""), immediately following the visitation. A reception will be held after the services at Breckenridge Brewery 2920 Brewery Ln. in Littleton. Lew was born in Cheverly, Maryland and moved down the east coast to Cocoa Beach, Florida. He graduated from Cocoa Beach High School and attended college in Cocoa, Florida. He joined the US Air Force in September of 1968 and trained as a Missile Electronics Technician. He served as a Sergeant at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he was part of the team that targeted the Minuteman Nuclear Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles with the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Lew separated from the Air Force in the fall of 1972 and then returned to Cocoa Beach, Florida to spend time with his family. He moved to Denver, Colorado in 1976. State Farm Insurance recruited Lew in 1978 from Luby Chevrolet due to his extensive knowledge of automotive bodywork. He retired from State Farm on June 1, 2016 after working 38.5 years, forming many important friendships during that time. Lew was a skilled paint and body man and truly enjoyed producing a flawless paint job. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, with Jeff Gordon and Martin Truex, Jr being his favorite drivers. His passion was caring for his well manicured lawn as well as his large vegetable garden. Lew enjoyed sharing the bounty of his abundant garden with friends and family. Mr. Hickman is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Hickman II (Dot) and Elsie Foster, along with his stepfather, Joe Foster, who had an immensely positive impact on Lew's life. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee; two sons, Sam (Ali) and Brian (Anna); two stepsons, Ron Maddox (Anna) and Mike Maddox (Dawn); and four granddaughters, Taylor, and Erin Maddox and Rylee and Collins Hickman. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
