Obituary

Leon Frederick Wyss was born to Charles and Frieda Wyss on August 5, 1934, in Jefferson City, Missouri. His early years were spent in Jefferson City, and the family later moved to Kansas City, Missouri while he was in high school. His early interests included baseball, earning extra money delivering newspapers and enjoying time spent with his older brothers, Paul and Kenneth. During a Christian youth camp, he met Elizabeth Anne Findlay.

Leon sensed a call to ministry in his teens, and after graduating from high school, he attended Bethany Nazarene College. In 1955 he married Elizabeth and the next year graduated with a degree in philosophy and religion with a minor in psychology. In 1958 he was ordained and spent his first seven years of ministry pastoring in Missouri and Texas. Leon and Elizabeth had their only child, Brent, in 1961 while living in Fort Worth, Texas.

Leon spent the next five years as an itinerant evangelist and then returned to pastoral ministry in Southern California, first in Norwalk and then in San Diego. Beginning in 1978 he served for two years as the Assistant to the President of Point Loma Nazarene College.

Returning to pastoral ministry, Leon moved to Clovis, New Mexico, where he was serving when he was elected the New Mexico District Superintendent. After eight years he was appointed as the District Superintendent for the state of Colorado.

In 1993 Leon received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Northwest Nazarene College. He gave leadership to the churches of Colorado until he retired in 2001. Leon also took advantage of some rare opportunities to minister internationally.

In his retirement he continued to preach in local churches, served as an interim pastor and gave Leadership and Ministry Seminars on college campuses and for Districts across the United States.

In over fifty years of ministry he was blessed to serve with many fine staff members, pastors and lay people whom he considered his friends.

Through the years his interests included hunting, fishing and sports of all kinds, including any car race he could attend. His favorite past time was golf which he played fifty three years with many of his friends until he was eighty, when his Parkinson’s made it too difficult to enjoy playing. He continued to love watching people play each day on his deck overlooking the 11th hole on the course at Gleneagles Village.

He and Liz moved to Lincoln Meadows Retirement Community in 2016. In 2018 Leon moved to Country Club Assisted Living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he received wonderful care and died peacefully on May 24, 2018.

Leon is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth, and son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Jolene Wyss.

A memorial service will be held at Denver First Church of the Nazarene, 3800 E Hampden Ave, Cherry Hills Village, CO 80113 (303) 761-8370, on Sunday, June 24th at 2:00 p.m.
