Frank Sferra

Frank Sferra, 77, passed away on July 30, 2014 after an extended illness. He was born in Denver on October 16, 1936. He is survived by an extended family, including his cousin Ed (Inez) DePinto. For 54 years, Frank Sferra was a nationally recognized speech and debate coach at Mullen High School. His Mullen students enjoyed great success at the state and national level. In 2012, Sferra became a 7 Diamond coach in the National Forensic League (NFL), one of a very few educators in the U.S. to reach that level. However, Frank impacted the entire Mullen community with unmatched dedication to its students and an unrivaled commitment to excellence and integrity. To honor his contributions, Mullen High School opened the Sferra Library & Resource Center in 2001. Sferra served 10 years as president of the NFL. He was a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame (1991) and the National Federation of State High School Associations' (NFHS) Hall of Fame (2003). Sferra was the first speech and debate coach inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame. In June, Sferra was presented with the inaugural NFHS Section 6 Heart of the Arts Award for his work in speech activities. Sferra was a graduate of Regis High School and Regis University. He held a Master's Degree in Communication from the University of Colorado. He was a teacher at Regis, St. Joseph, Bishop Machebeuf and Mullen high schools for 57 years. Services for Frank will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd at Mullen High School, Rilko Chapel, 3601 S. Lowell Blvd., Denver. Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 9:00 AM with Funeral Mass at 10.30 AM. Services will conclude with community and fellowship to follow at Mullen. It was Frank's wishes that memorial contributions be made to Mullen High School, 3601 S Lowell Blvd, Denver, CO 80236.
