Eugene Maffeo

August 18, 1925 — January 11, 2017

Eugene Maffeo, 91, beloved husband of June (died 2006) and later Dolores, father of Steven, father-in-law of Rhonda, and grandfather of Micah, died January 11. Son of Carmine and Lucille Maffeo, and brother of Marie, he was born in Denver on August 18, 1925 and attended Smedley Elementary, Horace Mann Junior High, North High, and Denver University (BA 1949, and MA 1952). He served in World War II in the infantry (Pacific Theater) rising to Technical Sergeant. Gene worked for 40 years at Manual High School as a Spanish and social studies teacher, a counselor, and as chairman of guidance, counseling, and evaluation. His interests included foremost the piano, and also reading, movies, history, politics, ping-pong, hiking, car travel, gardening, and home repair; he and June built two houses, acting as their own contractors and doing a lot of the work. He's also survived by step-children Robin, Thomas, and Patrick, and several nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Horan & McConaty Chapel, 1091 S. Colorado Boulevard, Denver, followed by a brief military ceremony on Feb. 6 at the Fort Logan National Cemetery.
