Dean Mackell

September 1, 1938 — May 4, 2018

Dean Mackell passed peacefully from this world to the next on May 4, 2018. Dean was a Denver native, born in 1938 to Edward and Mary Mackell with his twin sister Donna Haskins (both affectionately known to each other as “Fathead”). He married Carol Mary Moser of St. Paul, MN on June 19, 1965. Dean is survived by wife Carol and his three children Jeff Mackell, Gregg (Heather) Mackell and Lisa (Pat) Mackell Moran. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Lauren Mackell, Connor Mackell and Katie Moran. In addition, he is survived by Donna (Terry) Haskins, and numerous nephews and nieces and their kids. Dean graduated from Cathedral High School in 1956 and then received a BA in Philosophy from Carroll College in Helena, MT before heading to the Army for a 2-year stint. He was a serial entrepreneur beginning with restaurant ownership then owning multiple shoe stores and finishing his career with a travel agency. Dean was a man of strong faith in the Catholic Church. His heart touched everyone he met. As the owner of Dean’s Café and Lounge (on 16th Street between Tremont and Glenarm), he fed governors of Colorado and mayors of Denver. He always helped those in need. Until the day he stopped driving, Dean drove his friends and neighbors to bridge games, doctor’s offices and many other appointments. He truly lived his life to serve others. He was also the biggest Broncos and Rockies fan to walk the Earth. Dean was an original season ticket holder for both teams and only missed watching games when there was a conflict with a grandkid’s birthday, soccer game or dance recital. Dean had a kind heart and never met a dog who didn’t get a good pet on the head. He loved people and was born with the gift to talk to anyone at any time about anything. He will truly be missed by his friends and family. Friday evening May 11 from 6-8 p.m. there will be a drop-in visitation at Horan & McConaty, 3101 S Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood. Services will be Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. at Light of the World Catholic Church, 10316 W Bowles Ave, Littleton. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Food Bank of the Rockies or other charity of your choice. Please share memories of Dean and condolence messages with his family below.
