Obituary

Carolyn May Hartman (Swenson)
December 12, 1933 - September 24, 2017

Carolyn Hartman (83) of Aurora Co, passed away peacefully on 9/24/2017 with family members by her side. Carolyn was born in Portland Oregon to Arthur F Swenson and Edith Martha Swenson (Snyder). She was a 1952 graduate of Portland’s own Cleveland High School. Carolyn and Arden Hartman married in 1955 and moved to Colorado where they raised their 4 children. Carolyn and Arden have been blessed with 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and a soon-to-be 4th one.

Carolyn is survived by Arden, her best friend and beloved husband of over 62 years; their children David (Liz), Dan (Chris), Cathy, and daughter-in-law Gilly; her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Katie (Cam), Tessa (Randy), Elliott and Lyla, Megan (Daniel), Olivia plus 1; Haley (Matt), Carly (Brendon), Hunter, Brian, and Ellie; and nephew Arthur

Sadly, Carolyn was preceded in death by her son Douglas, her parents, and her brothers Arthur, Darryl, & Arnold.

Carolyn was very athletic and loved the outdoors. She was an avid golfer, tennis player, skier, bicyclist and certified scuba diver. She once did a 100-mile bike ride without any real training! That Carolyn had a fierce competitiveness and was always on the move! Other hobbies included fishing, hiking and camping with her family. Carolyn loved of ocean beaches and taking in the warmth of the sun under a clear sky. . Carolyn was an active member of the Adams Arapahoe Women’s Club where she met many lifelong friends.

Carolyn had an artistic side and was passionate about painting, quilting, knitting, and creating stained glass works of art

Over the years, Carolyn worked as a nanny, dental hygienist, pre-school teacher, and money counter at the dog track for several years. She was happiest as a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed shopping with her grandkids for their birthdays and watching her grandchildren grow into amazing adults.

For over 62 years, the love and devotion shared between Carolyn and Arden was undeniable and inspiring. Carolyn had a quick-witted humor and a hearty laugh that followed anything she thought was funny. She was very sentimental and a small incident, word or thing would trigger a fond memory and her eyes would immediately brim with tears.

Carolyn and Arden travelled extensively throughout their 62 years of marriage and had the opportunity to rub elbows with some of interesting people along the way. Some of note include “high fiving” Princess Diana, discussing the greyhound industry with Prince Edward, and shaking hands with Pope John Paul II.

Carolyn had an incredible will to survive and was so strong in so many ways. She was not a pansy! She lived a full life filled with exciting travel, famous encounters, and great family and friends who loved her very much. Carolyn will be greatly missed and we are all blessed to have known her.
