Bertha McDougal

December 9, 1924 — April 27, 2015

Surrounded by her loving family, Bertha McFadden McDougal went to her heavenly home on April 27, 2015. Bertha was born on December 9, 1924 in Denver. She was the youngest girl in a family of ten children. At age 4, her father was tragically killed. Her mother, Bertha McFadden VanDyke, raised her ten children through The Great Depression. Each of Bertha's siblings maintained a strong priority and responsibility for an on-going and deep joy in the importance of family. Bertha graduated from Manual High school and remained a loyal Thunderbird throughout her life. She married Hugh (Mac) McDougal on October 16th. As he fought in the Pacific Theatre of World War II, she became a champion catcher in Denver's Semi-Pro Women's Softball League. Together they raised five children who were active and accomplished athletes. She enjoyed working alongside of ""Mac"" in his career at Dave Cook's Sporting Goods and pro-baseball scout. He served the schools and colleges of Colorado and Wyoming. Together they could be found at high school or college sporting events. After his death in 1974, she had a career with the Bureau of Land Management. As her grandchildren began to participate in sports, she followed each of their schedules and rarely missed a chance to cheer them on. She encouraged every one of them to pursue their talents. Bertha worked long after her retirement preparing taxes in order to pay for her Denver Broncos season tickets. She often rode the bus with her dear friend, Betty Kelly, to watch the Colorado Rockies play. Her greatest joy was to praise her God and to simply be with her family, who will forever hold her in their hearts. She was a communicant at Mother of God parish and a life-long member of the Alter and Rosary Society of Presentation of our Lady. Bertha is survived by her children Christine Murphy (Jim Murphy), Susie Ritz, Hugh McDougal (Karen Hendricks), Peg McDougal and Karen Whalen (Brent Whalen). She was pre-deceased by her husband, Hugh McDougal, her son, Tim McDougal, her son-in-law, Steven Ritz, and her daughter-in-law, Evelyn McDougal. She is also survived by her brother Joseph McFadden and her sister Bernadette Graham. She has nineteen grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
