Obituary

A.W. " Bill" Hiner III

Born in 1929 Bill passed away on February 23, 2017. The son of Arthur Wilbur Hiner, Jr. and Kathryn Louise Farnsworth Hiner, Bill grew up in Denver with a great love of the outdoors - an Eagle scout, scuba diver, and mountain climber having climbed most of Colorado's 14, 000 foot peaks by 1957. A graduate of East High School in 1947, Bill attended University of Colorado from 1947-1949 where he majored in Business and Geology and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Bill joined the United States Air Force serving as an airman pilot in Rapid City, South Dakota from 1949-1953, later graduating from the University of Denver.

As president and chief executive officer of Capitol Federal Savings & Loan in Denver (founded by his father and grandfather in 1925), he was known as a hard worker and well-liked by his employees. He served as president of the Savings League of Colorado and the American Savings and Loan Institute of Denver as well as on the boards of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka, Century Bank of Denver, US Savings League of Chicago, and the Council of Mutual
Savings Institution of New York.

Bill loved giving his time to many organizations, having served on the boards of Arapahoe House, Boy Scouts of America, Colorado Mountain Club (a life-time member), University of Colorado Alumni Association, El Jebel Shrine as well as Cherry Hills Country Club (where he was a long-time member) and the Garden of the Gods Club.

Active in his retirement he enjoyed golf, travel, singing with the Denver MountainAires Barbershop Chorus and his membership in the Barbershop Harmony Society as well as spending time with his family at his winter home in Carlsbad, CA.

He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie, daughter Cindy (Bob) Salvato of La Jolla, CA; sons Gary (Christina) of Cherry Valley, CA; and Ron (Sarah) of Westport, CT and Edwards, CO. Two stepsons, Jim McKenna of Peoria, AZ; and Jeff (Ilene) McKenna of Phoenix, AZ as well as eight adoring grandchildren Katie and Will Salvato of La Jolla, CA, Callie and Jackie Hiner of Westport, CT; Michael and Adam McKenna of Glendale, AZ and Connor and Katie McKenna of Phoenix, AZ.

Donations may be made to Arapahoe House (arapahoehouse.org) or the Colorado Neurological Institute (thecni.org).
